About Us

Tamina Community Center was organized in August of 1998 as a non-profit organization by the state of Texas.

Located in the historic Tamina community of Montgomery County, Texas, the Center provides children, their parents and the entire community with access to valuable educational resources and other services.

  • In 2004, the Tamina Community Center was awarded the Savvy Award from Foley's and the Houston Chronicle, the Community Quarterback Award from the National Football League,  was featured in Parade Magazine, and received $36,000.
  •  The Tamina Community Center moved out of two bed room trailer into a new building that was donated by a group of concerned and caring men from the local area.

2007

  •  KPRC-TV awarded Mrs. Grimes the Jefferson Award for her work in the area and joins other Jefferson Award recipients such as Cesar Chavez, Barbara Bush, Bill and Melinda Gates and many others. She later traveled to Washington D.C. the following year to represent the city of Houston at the Jefferson Award National Ceremony.

Our Founder and Director
Shirley Grimes

"It all began when I noticed that we had nothing positive for our children; grades dropping for lack of homework help, poor clothing attire, children needing food, parents dropping kids off at places that were not safe. I prayed that some help would come. I never thought that God would lead me to start a program to assist the community and surrounding area."
